Data on Food Insufficiency of Households with Children are from the National Survey of Children's Health. The survey question asks about food sufficiency in the prior 12 months. We elect to use the 2-year combined data for purposes of reliability.
Statewide and county trends in food insecurity and average cost of meal data are from Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap Report. Estimates are derived from a Current Population Survey (CPS) data according to a research-based model of determinants of food insecurity (including unemployment, median income, poverty, race, presence of disability). Technical documentation is here for more information on the methodology.
